The 10-Second Version (AI Summary)

What happened: Used EV prices jumped 9.8% in a year, and EVs now sell faster than gas or hybrid cars.

Why it matters: High fuel prices are pushing shoppers toward electrified used vehicles, and the trend shows no sign of slowing.

What to do: Get your team confident acquiring, pricing, and selling used EVs while the edge lasts.

Someone pull up the receipt tracker. We've spent a year telling dealers that the used EV market is moving and that anyone not getting on it is falling behind. New data from iSeeCars backs it up, and we dug into it on today's episode of the Automotive State of the Union.

"People want these vehicles."

How fast is the used EV market moving?

iSeeCars analyzed more than 1.5 million 1- to 5-year-old used vehicles sold in September 2025 and September 2026. Here are the numbers to know:

  • Used EV prices: up 9.8%, from $29,637 to $32,533

  • Used hybrid prices: up 4.9%, from $32,851 to $34,476

  • Used gas car prices: up 0.3%, from $31,864 to $31,954

  • EV vs. gas price gap: from $2,227 less than gas a year ago to $579 more today

  • EV days on market: down 10.1%, from 46.6 to 41.9

  • Gas days on market: up 19.9%, from 45.7 to 54.8

  • Streak: September marked the sixth straight month of year-over-year EV price growth

The biggest price gainers were the BMW X2 (+24.3%), Tesla Model S (+22.5%), and Tesla Model X (+18%). Executive Analyst Karl Brauer credits ongoing high fuel prices and the EV segment's recovery from last year's loss of federal incentives.

Which used EVs still sit on the lot?

Not every EV is winning. The Cadillac Escalade iQ averaged 128.7 days on market, and the GMC Sierra EV and Chevy Silverado EV both sat for roughly 90 days. The slowest used car overall was a plug-in hybrid, the Ford Escape at 154.5 days.

That's why education matters. You have to know which EVs to acquire, feel confident buying them, and train your team to sell them. Edges like this one tend to disappear in six to nine months, so get it while it's here and then find the next one. Alex Lawrence of EVauto is covering exactly this at ASOTU CON West on Nov. 18.

Why will shoppers pay more for a used EV?

Think about what a $579 premium means on a 48-month loan: about $12 a month. Now compare that with the knife-in-the-gut feeling of watching the numbers spin at the gas pump every single week. Right now, shoppers care more about what they pay at the pump than about a slightly higher monthly payment, and the market shows it. Brauer expects the trend to continue until fuel prices moderate.
