BMW Takes No.1 in Luxury Registrations by Thin Margin

Experian U.S. vehicle registration data for 2021 shows BMW was the luxury segment leader, but a recent surge in Tesla sales almost closed the gap. Global Tesla sales last year rose 87%, putting the EV company ahead of Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, but falling just 5,041 vehicles short of first place BMW.

Registrations and sales are not always 1:1 as a car sold this month may be registered next month. However, with a new factory opening in Texas this year and Tesla’s dedication to boosting production of the Model Y, the race is still very much on

More from Experian

  • Model Y was the best selling EV in the U.S. last year at 169,325
  • Tesla Model 3 was 2nd at 151,599
  • Ford Mustang was 3rd at 25,695
  • And the Bolt was 4th at 23,078
