Production of the Chevy Bolt was suspended 6 months ago, and signs suggest it may never start again. After reports in August of Bolt batteries catching fire, GM and LG began seeking a solution, they announced later they had found the issue and would have a new battery coming soon.
The recall. While efforts to replace all defective batteries are underway, the partnership between GM and LG has primarily focused on new Ultium battery plants in lieu of restarting Bolt production.
GM CEO, Mary Barra, announced last week the company will soon introduce a battery-powered version of the Chevy Equinox. The model will be cheaper than the Bolt and have none of the complicated history. Coupled with the Orion Township Factory, where production has been halted while the battery issue was investigated, being converted to build more EV picks in the face of the upcoming Ford Lightning.
