Despite being declared a "Dead end" in 2015, battery quick swap stations have made a small but hopeful reappearance. Chinese auto company, NIO, installed 700 fully automated battery swap stations in 2021 and to date has replaced 5.3 million batteries for EV users.
There are still challenges to face before battery swaps can replace, or even seriously supplement, the existing recharging infrastructure such as brand compatibility. But ultimately swapping may be the best way to solve for recharge times, battery replacement expenses, and new battery technology distribution as EVs become more advanced and common in the world.
