GM Seeks Approval to Deploy Driverless Car

GM's Cruise subsidiary has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for permission to put the driverless Cruise Origin into commercial service. Cruise announced in the filing that the EV has been purposefully designed from the ground up to operate without a human driver. Cruise, with their parent company GM, says the Origin achieves the safety objective of existing standards and will help enable future AV (autonomous vehicle) regulations.

While Cruise started taking sign-ups for test rides around San Francisco three weeks ago, mass production of the vehicle is expected to begin in Detroit late this year.
