A formal investigation was announced Thursday into 416,000 Tesla vehicles over reports of unexpected brake activations. The evaluation will begin with 2021-2022 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles because of their advanced driver assistance systems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 354 complaints about the issue over the last 9 months. Customers report rapid deceleration that is often repeated in a single trip. Owners say they have raised concerns over the "phantom braking" with Tesla , which dismissed the complaints as normal breaking.
