A new bill in Kansas aims to tax public EV charging. The state has a $0.24 per gallon fuel tax for maintaining roads, so the proposed $0.03 per kWh would contribute to the same fund.
Calling Foul? Some say the bill targets low-income residents of the state and would essentially double tax EV owners, since the state registering an electric vehicle is more than double the cost of ICE vehicles. Revenue generated by the higher registration is also used for the road maintenance fund. The higher EV registration costs, combined with home charging not receiving the same tax, leads EV advocates to suggest this is more about deterring investment than it is about tax balance.
