Tesla's push to boost output and sales received a shot in the arm last week when Germany approved production at the new plant outside Berlin. Environmental groups have expressed concerns about the plant's impact, but impact tests are still pending.
The Berlin gigafactory has begun construction under pre-approval permits. It will start production of the Model Y and eventually have the capacity to make 500,000 vehicles and 50 gigawatt-hours of battery a year, outpacing established European automakers in both regards.
