Late last week, Mazda announced the appointment of a new President and CEO, 40-year company veteran Masahiro Moro to replace current President and CEO Akira Marumoto, who has held the seat since 2018

  • Moro is currently a director and senior managing executive officer and had previously been the head of Mazda’s North America operations
  • Moro cites recent growth in the US and hopes to continue by upgrading its 360 Dealerships and targeting 1,000 vehicles a year per store initially. "If that can be done, next would be to work to 1,200 units," he said.
  • Mazda also nominated Jeff Guyton, 56, senior managing executive officer and its current North America head, as chief financial officer and assistant to the president pending the June approval of the shareholders and board.

Insurers in Europe are being forced to write off almost new EVs with only slight damage to unrepairable battery packs according to a Reuters report.

  • While some automakers have made battery packs easier to repair, Tesla's Model Y, has a new structural battery pack that has been described by experts as having "zero repairability."
  • A replacement battery for a Tesla Model 3 can cost up to $20,000, for a vehicle that retails for about $43k
  • Peter Gruber, owner of  Phoenix, Arizona, Gruber Motor Co has mostly focused on replacing batteries in older Tesla models says "An insurance company is not going to take that risk because they're facing a lawsuit later on if something happens with that vehicle and they did not total it," he said citing lack of data accessibility on Teslas
  • As a result, insurance premiums on EVs are higher than combustion vehicles. In Europe, as high as almost 30% more

The company who brought us everyday concepts that were once unheard of such as; coffee in a to-go cup, self-serve fountain soda, and being open 24 hours is now planning on shaking up the EV Charging space. That company is 7 Eleven. Last week they announced their 7Charge network of EV chargers that will be rolling out across the US and Canada

  • In a release, the company is looking to build “one of the largest and most compatible” networks and are also releasing a companion app to help them do so
  • Network will be owned and operated by the company and powered by 100% green energy
  • There are already active chargers in several states including Florida, Texas, Colorado, and California

Kyle Mountsier  01:58

Todd Kabuto vehicle,

Paul Daly  01:59

I like it, a couple of Chevy's in there. Both some of them was interesting losses last week is the Tesla Model plaid s or the Model S plaid loss to the Chevy Corvette Premiere Edition buy a lot like 77 I

Kyle Mountsier  02:14

think it may just be indicative of our audience.

Paul Daly  02:17

Maybe maybe less surprising that we and then another phone was a Ford a Ford woody I can't remember what year that sucker was like 50 Something I think, but that's just an awesome vehicle, but it's not as interesting. It's an interesting loss, but it's not as surprising when the VW Beetle iconic, iconic, but that Ford Woody is just awesome. You just want to throw a surfboard on top. And like that was like the first three row SUV.

Kyle Mountsier  02:40

Yeah, no, I love i That car is iconic. And everybody's tried to bring it back like the PT Cruiser. Back. No, you're not bringing it back.

Paul Daly  02:50

Please leave it like let it die. Let it so we got a bunch of matchups coming up. This week fun. We're down to the semi finals. Today, it's going to be 2014 Corvette versus a 2010 Chevy Astro van. There's conversation that needs to happen around that one. I'm partial to the Astros and myself. But first bills aren't one of those. And I think everyone, here's the thing, I think everyone has an astro van experience at some point and whether it's a kid as an adult, or as I'm sure

Kyle Mountsier  03:20

Paul Daly  04:00

show and and if that happens, definitely we are giving you massive props from the stage and the live stream. So your people are going to feel amazing. So there you go. Little bit of that. Hey, we got some news to talk about. Let's get into it. Alright, so late last week, Mazda announced the appointment of a new president and CEO is a 40 year company veteran Masahiro Moro to replace current president and CEO Akira Morimoto, who has held the seat since 2018. So Morrow the new president CEO is currently a director and senior managing executive officer has previously been the head of mods in North America. So you probably got a little familiarity with him, Kyle.

Kyle Mountsier  04:36

I know the name Masahiro Moro. Yeah and a lot of people do and I think that it you know from I don't know him personally or anything like that, but it seems like it's gonna be a good move. Done a lot of good you know, the the American operations of the North American operations for Mazda has really been growing over the last five to six years. And so I think this will this will expand globally in an ominous sided to see what happens.

Paul Daly  05:02

What was what was the vibe when when kind of he was in charge? Like what what kind of in your mind what kind of it was the calling card for that that season of bosta?

Kyle Mountsier  05:11

Well, I couldn't tell you that much because back when in that season, I was little I wasn't as familiar with small fry. Yeah, so But okay, you know, I just know that the leadership of the the the North American side of stuff recently has been just onpoint growing market share like crazy. Yeah,

Paul Daly  05:29

the proofs in the pudding. So it's in the pudding. Well, Morrow cites recent growth in the US and hopes to continue by upgrading it's about 360 dealerships, and targeting 1000 vehicles per year as a sales target per store. Initially, he says if we can get to that point, the next point is we're going to work to 1200 so

Kyle Mountsier  05:48

lunch is a big deal because like the median right now is nowhere close to 80. Which is about what that is, and 80 a month is 80 a month. You know, you've got a lot of masa stores, it's a small market store, you don't have you don't have you know, trucks or large SUVs or, or things to compete in that. Like in that world. I think it's a nine model line which you compare that to like a Toyota or Honda you're talking 23 model model lines. And so it's a tough it's a tough hill to climb, but I'm confident that they'll do it. And you know, I was got a little heart in the Mazda I know you

Paul Daly  06:25

do. I know you do. In the Mazda also nominated Jeff Guyton 50. He's 56 years old, senior managing executive officer and current North America head is now going to be the CFO and Assistant to the President pending the June approval of the board. So they're just moving things around moving and shaking moves, positioning for the winds, you don't say, positioning for them. Come on, I can't think of a reason to press this button right here. I felt like I hadn't pressed this button. I just felt like we needed some segue. G even without a segue. So insurers in Europe are being forced to write off completely. These are EVs that are just about new with only slight damages sometimes just scratches to the battery packs, because they're kind of unrepairable. And they're lacking a battery analytics data, it says in a Reuters report. While some automakers have made battery packs easier to repair over the years, Tesla's model Y, the new model Y actually has a battery pack that is part of the vehicles structure. And it's been described by experts as having zero repairability. So for instance, a replacement battery on like a Tesla Model three can cost $20,000, when the vehicle new is just over 40,000 and depreciates quickly. There are no diagnostic tools for repair shops to see if the batteries are doing okay, or if there's been damage is one of the problems. And so you know, Peter Guber owner of a phoenix arizona company who is focused on replacing batteries mostly in older Tesla's, he says an insurance company is never going to take the risk, because they face lawsuits down the line, if something is wrong, something's wrong. And they don't have any battery data, meaning premiums are going to be higher for EVs, and also all the talk about being green and co2 emissions. Everybody knows it takes or if you don't know what you're about to know, it takes a lot more co2 emissions to create an Eevee. And once that vehicle dries for, you know, a few 10s of 1000s of miles is when that balance, you know, evens out, and then you start to get far side. Yeah, so So I mean,

Kyle Mountsier  08:33

it's very interesting because this this story is happening and alongside of another story, where local repair shops are now suing Tesla on the grounds that they've made it too hard to repair these vehicles hard, you know, where the repair shop shops, but I think it might be a customer, you know, lawsuit that saying, hey, look, we want to be able to take our vehicles to these to these to the side shops when you made it to honor the warranty process the repair process. So you've got all of that kind of mixed up in, you know, insurance companies having to having the total of these vehicles that typically they would be able to repair to for four to $5,000. But now you got a $20,000 battery that's got a little scratch on it, that they're worried about the next ownership or anything like that. It's a it's still like there's still a lot of balance. There's also the stories of like basically, these these Evie startups going under these small Evie startups that probably we haven't even heard of, there's over 100 of them apparently, there's just worldwide that there's still that we're still seeing, like them failing and so it's still we have to remember this is a very startup natured environment for EVs and so there's still a lot to figure out and the insurance thing is definitely a big one and and I'm like that that makes me nervous, you know, because of the cost of insurance rising due to EVs.

Paul Daly  09:57

They said in some places in Europe, it says my Just like 30% Higher. If you drive an Eevee unright, you start thinking about cost of ownership. I mean, Tesla does have its own insurance product, right? So they obviously have the most data. And they have said that they're going to focus more on battery repairability, which makes a lot of sense when we're talking about this. But I guess one thing at a time the next problem comes up. Hey, before we go into this last story, because the thing is going to be a fun one. Let's do a mid March. It's kind of mid March still. mid March vibe check. In the auto dealership world. What are the vibes mid March when you're working in a dealership?

Kyle Mountsier  10:37

I mean, most typically, and when I as I'm talking to dealers this month, there's kind of like summer up, summer down. There's a lot more. There's a lot more volatility right now. But definitely that that last 10 days of March. I don't care whether you're down or up. It's kind of like the last week of December. You Anything can thing. There's a similar vibe, at least for me, because a lot of manufacturers have their have their year end. So they'll press on incentives. They'll press on you the dealership owner presses. You know, March is kind of historically the start of the selling season. You know, you've got March and August as two big months in the year. And so you kind of get that like, especially man I love that like the last 10 days is landing on the Monday I'm sure that the morning meetings this morning are getting a little riled up, you know?

Paul Daly  11:27

Oh, yeah. Alright, so Ellie chimed in on the live stream waiting on that sweet sweet tax money you know it that's coming in. Carly White is saying Marlene, Carly I used

Kyle Mountsier  11:38

to work with Carly we use in finance. I was a sales man and no way. Yeah. Okay, so he knows. What's it? Yeah. Even better,

Paul Daly  11:48

even. All the way back? There cool today, and I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what the dealership vibes are in the northeast, it's going to be 50 degrees today and sunny.

Kyle Mountsier  11:59

It's gonna be warmer than that.

Paul Daly  12:02

I'll tell you what, the vibes always pick up when the sun's shining, the snow is gone. And people start to like emerge in the Northeast people like you haven't seen your neighbors in five months. You know what I mean? You're like, Oh, I remember you. I remember you. You made it through the minute. Congratulations. So I think the fives are doing that. Well speaking of vibes just a straight vibe this story segue Oh, alright, let us know itself Kyle.

Kyle Mountsier  12:28

So the company you brought us everyday concept that were once unheard of such as coffee and a to go cup self serve fountain soda or not and being too open 24 hours are now shaking up the Evie charging space see 711 announced that they are going to bring their seven charge networks of Evie chargers across the US and Canada. And they are they have said that quote they will build one of the largest and most compatible networks alongside an app that allows you to see where you're at. I mean look we've been saying this say in the saying this gas companies gas station companies getting in the Evie charging game has to happen for the network to drive as deep into the US and Canadian fabric as as gas and oil has.

Paul Daly  13:23

So they need to build a Slurpee thing right into the charging thing. Oh, right into it. You plug your car in and then they get the little cup dispenser and then you pull them that love and you get your Slurpee I look 711 There's like some kind of pros and cons in my mind a pro is that they've actually done a pretty historically Well, good job of creating gas station food that people actually go out of their way to get sure right that dogs in the Slurpee so like, the downside is I don't know how many seven elevens you've been to, but most of the seven elevens I've been to was where I'd really be excited to keep my car parked outside for a long time and really sign up for it either. You're like

Kyle Mountsier  14:04

we get some twice dailies with these you posted twice daily is up there. No,

Paul Daly  14:10

no, they're kind of what like, like you looked at like a chain like Wawa who's done an amazing job of creating environment we could go inside and sit a little bit you have ample parking lot space, a lot of seven elevens like let's face it, they were designed to minimize real estate and be like I don't want you in the store longer than two minutes.

Kyle Mountsier  14:27

Right? Yeah, this is this is this is all while buches is out here adding like 15 stores with 5000 gas pumps right

Paul Daly  14:39

we just got a cup live stream as Kyle saying that aerial of Alaska as you imagine buches with chargers and it sounds like I was just with chargers

Kyle Mountsier  14:46

would be full lit because it's a full Have you ever been to a Bucky spa?

Paul Daly  14:51

That's dude, I feel like you failed me as a resident Nashville host because you didn't take me to a buches there's no buches

Kyle Mountsier  14:56

posts, you know, buches doesn't live close to to a city they only are like on outskirts in travel. It's similar to like,

Paul Daly  15:06

let's place any of those travel. Like right now. Yeah,

15:10

but like a travel center right travel they are ginormous they're normally at least an hour outside of the city and they have all the food all the all the like,

Paul Daly  15:23

you have to go to get shower. They're probably can you shower there? Oh, without it. Yeah. And

Kyle Mountsier  15:30

the bathrooms are the nicest bathrooms you've ever seen in let's call it any retail establishment.

Paul Daly  15:36

Thank you Rob downs for chiming in Flying J exactly. I could picture the logo and the colors in the thing. So I scheduled Oh, give

Kyle Mountsier  15:43

it to 711 for being first but someone else is gonna be fancier.

Paul Daly  15:47

Yeah, it's kind of hard when you invented coffee and a to go cup to like, have people bet against you. Well, that is a Monday. Look, whatever your Monday vibe is.
